Discussion of “Termination Shock”

The Austin Forum's July discussion event will bring us back to the discussion of a science fiction book with very real-world implications: Neal Stephenson's new climate thriller, "Termination Shock." Join us at Austin Forum advisory board member, and elite sci-fi geek, Julie Tomlin returns to moderate a thoughtful discussion of the implications of a book about how climate action could pit individuals versus governments, as well as governments versus each other. (This discussion will not weigh in on real-world political matters, only on climate chance science, and science-fiction, and the implications for technology companies and policies.)

Discussion of “This Is How They Tell Me the World Ends”

Cyberweapons add a new dimension to human conflict, and thus have implications for the development--and application--of new types of weapons and the modern conduct of warfare. The 2021 book "This Is How They Tell Me the World Ends: The Cyberweapons Arms Race," by Nicole Perlroth, is a NY Times Bestseller that is non-fiction journalism but reads like a modern-day spy thriller--with insights and perspectives that are illuminating, possibly terrifying, and worthy of discussion (particularly in light of the Ukraine invasion). Join us for an online discussion of this prize-winning book and its implications, led by SXSW Chief Programming Officer,...

Stabilizing and Decarbonizing the Texas Grid with Computation and Bitcoin

Renewable carbon-neutral generation is now the least expensive means to produce electricity in the world. In West Texas alone, we can produce terawatt-hours of power through wind turbines and solar panels. The question is no longer how do we generate sustainable energy, but how do we leverage its power efficiently and economically. This question is met with two challenges. One, the wind does not always blow and the sun does not always shine. When this is the case, energy costs rise. Two, even if the sun is shining and the wind is blowing, the best wind and solar sources are not...
